Balanced diet

  of  2

Teacher information

Students are presented with six different characters. They have a range of ages and lifestyles. Students should select one character and attempt to produce a balanced diet that would meet the needs of their chosen character.

An ideal daily amount is indicated together with an allowable daily range. The allowable daily range indicates that a diet needs to be balanced over several days rather than on just one specific day. For each meal chosen feedback is shown in both graphical and text form, which either confirms a suitable balance or highlights any deficiencies.

Activity

Provide your students with six different characters, who have a range of ages and lifestyles. Students should select one character and attempt to produce a balanced diet that would meet the needs of their chosen character.

The following substances, which are required for a balanced diet, should be covered:

  • Carbohydrate
  • Protein
  • Fat
  • Vitamins (Vitamin C and Folic Acid)
  • Minerals (Calcium, Iron and Sodium)
  • Fibre
  • Water

These worksheets can be used to reinforce the knowledge of what comprises a balanced diet gained through use of the activity.

More information about diet and digestion can be found in our Diet and digestion resource.
